Our top ten things to do in St Lucia

In this latest edition of Paul’s Picks, I am featuring St Lucia.

As always in my Top 10 lists, you will find links to information about the things to do, see, and eat in each location. I started doing lists in college to help me learn and study easier so that’s why I use them when I’m helping people learn about all the great things they can do when they travel.

Where do I get my information? It’s a mix of studying for certifications, personal experience, research, or client recommendations.

Have something more that people should know about this location? Add your thoughts in the comments below.

1. Climb the Gros Piton

“St. Lucia is a beautiful mountainous island with stunning views, picturesque beaches, and breathtaking landscapes. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the St. Lucia Pitons are two volcanic plugs on the southwest coast of the island attracting many tourists from all over the world. It is a very popular travel destination for honeymooners – as I learned, and an idyllic place for adventurous visitors.”

2. Morne Fortune

“Morne Fortuné means “Hill of Good luck” which is far from the truth, since this area was on many occasions the bloody battleground between the French and the English. It was later renamed Fort Charlotte 1794 by the father of Queen Victoria of Great Britain after a battle victory.”

 3. Marigot Bay

“Surrounded by forested hills on three sides it is known locally as ‘the hurricane hole’ and is recognised as one of the world’s true safe harbors; the area’s picturesque beauty is undeniably also a major draw. Thanks to the bay’s sheltered position and naturally deep waters it is an attractive hideaway for sailors escaping stormy seas, however it’s abundantly clear that these features also appeal to those seeking a more dynamic Caribbean escape.”

 4. Treetop Adventure Park

“Treetop Adventure Park is a great excursion for cruise passengers, but it worked for us staying on the island as well.  The park offers transfers between cruise ships and the adventure park, and they will ensure you return to your ship on time.”

5.  Castries Market

“The market was constructed in 1891 by building engineers Bruce & Still Ltd., of Liverpool. It was originally built to improve the town’s appearance and was opened by Sir Charles Bruce on July 2, 1894. The building became the central place for selling a variety of goods such as: fresh meat and fish, herbs, spices, crafts and dry goods.”

6. Antillia Brewing Company

“We hunted for some cold ones on the magical island of Saint Lucia, and discovered the new Antillia Brewing Company brewery and bar. Located on the northwest side of the island in picturesque Rodney Bay, Antillia Brewing Company is one of the friendliest drinking holes you’re gonna find.”

 7.  Botanical Gardens of the Soufriere Estate

“Just a few minutes drive from the centre of Soufriere, Diamond Falls Botanical Gardens is part of the Soufriere Estate and comprises six acres of planted tropical gardens including the waterfall known as Diamond Falls. The cement-coloured Diamond River comes directly from the volcanic Sulphur Springs, and the mineral-rich water gives the 17 metre falls a multi-hued glow with a stained appearance to the rock face.”

 8.  Deep Sea sport fishing

“For big game anglers, the waters surrounding St. Lucia are a fisherman’s paradise. Saint Lucia is known for having some of the deepest ocean waters in the Caribbean. The Blue Marlin is frequently found in these waters, a thrilling experience that entices fishing enthusiast from around the world.”

 9.  Toraille waterfall

“Palm trees, golden beaches, clear turquoise waters – Saint Lucia is your picture-perfect Caribbean island paradise. But although this part of the world is famous for its sun, sea and sand, Saint Lucia has plenty more to offer than just being a tropical beach escape. So on my first trip to the island I headed out to explore some of its cultural, foodie and scenic sights on a tour of Saint Lucia’s highlights – beyond the beach.”

 10. Dive the Coral Spawning

“Coral Spawning happens once a year and is one of nature’s most spectacular and rare performances. A handful of guests at Anse Chastanet, St Lucia, are lucky enough to witness this marvel annually as the natural wonder occurs right off the beaches of this charming resort.”

Our top ten things to do in Jamaica!

In this latest edition of Paul’s Picks, I’m featuring JAMAICA.

 1. Dunn’s River Falls

“Dunn’s River Falls is unique, and just like Reggae, the 180 foot high and 600 foot long landmark is world famous. It stands as a living testament to Jamaica’s natural beauty and is the most popular of all the Jamaican falls, attracting millions of the world’s visitors each year.”

 2. Devon House

“The original Devon House Ice Cream Parlor is on the grounds of Devon House in Kingston, home of Jamaica’s first black millionaire. If you are in Kingston, it is worth a visit. There is something special about eating Devon House ice cream and walking about the property’s gorgeous grounds. It is almost like a Sunday afternoon ritual for some locals.”

 3. Dolphin Cove

“How many people have “swim with dolphins” on their bucket list? Plenty of people all share the same dream of interacting with these wonderful creatures. The great news is, when you visit
Dolphin Cove in Ocho Rios, Jamaica, you can turn that dream into a reality.”

 4. Bob Marley Museum, Kingston

“If you ever needed a reason to visit Jamaica other than the pristine beaches and tropical waterfalls, you could try checking out Jamaica’s most-visited attraction: The Bob Marley Museum in Kingston. Bob Marley is arguably the most famous Jamaican who ever lived, and his music still reverberates around the island, creating the real soundtrack of the country. The music he created is essential to Jamaican culture.”

 5. Bamboo Rafting on the Martha Brae River

“There is a legend about home Martha Brea got its name from a folk tale of a witch who was Taino — beaten by Spanish settlers to disclose the location of a hidden chest of gold along the river. She eventually told them where the gold was then used her magic to change the path of the river, which made it hard for the hunters to find the gold. The entrance to the cave was closed by her, which is where the gold was buried, even now.”

 6. Great Houses

“These houses are today, arguably the most prominent and tangible remaining symbol of the plantation era. The Jamaica National Heritage Trust has declared several of them National Monuments, as they serve to highlight the importance of the plantation era.”

 7. Green Grotto Caves

“The Green Grotto caves played a large part in Jamaican history. They are believed to have been used as dwellings for the first inhabitants of the island, Arawak Indians known as the Tainos.”

 8. Enjoy the Beaches of Jamaica

“Wondering which part of Jamaica has the best beaches? This Caribbean island is known for its friendly people, warm climate, and in particular, its amazing beaches. It can be difficult to know which spots to check out while on the island, and especially which beaches are worth exploring, but ahead of your trip, we’ve put together a full listing of the 23 best beaches in Jamaica that will grant you that tropical beach experience you’ve always dreamed about.”

 9. Floyd’s Pelican Bar

“A trip to Jamaica wouldn’t be complete without having a Red Stripe at Floyd’s Pelican Bar. No matter if you are staying in Negril, Ocho Rios, or Montego Bay it’s worth a day trip. It’s one of our favorite things to do in Jamaica. No other bar will ever compare. After several visits, we’ve put together everything you need to know when visiting the Pelican Bar in Jamaica.”

 10. Bobsled through the Mystic Mountains

“I lowered myself into a slick-looking bobsled, jet black with the Jamaican flag stripes down the side, and positioned my hand on the brake levers to my left and right. Could I really do this? Would I crash spectacularly like the Jamaican bobsledding team did so famously at the 1988 Olympics? ”

 Food Bonus

“The mere mention of the words ‘Jamaican food’ can inspire the need to teleport right back to the amazing restaurant that stirred your love for the popular Jamaican cuisine in the first place. There’s just something about the seasoning and spices used in this type of Caribbean cooking that can turn even the toughest critic into the most mellow foodie, and this will likely be your experience once you find that Jamaican dish that resonates with your soul… or your palate.”

Our top ten things to do in Maldives!

In this latest edition of Paul’s Picks, I am featuring Maldives.

1. Diving Bluetribe Moofushii

“Constance Moofushi is located in one of the archipelago’s finest dive spots, the South Ari Atoll, where guests can spot baby reef sharks just steps from the beach in the house reef. An all-inclusive setting enables guests to completely relax into the island way of life.”

2. Extreme Water Sports

“Maldives, a really beautiful place to enjoy the going-to-be best moments of life, offers a lot of adventurous kicks for tourists. Most interesting of them being watersports, loved by swimmers and non-swimmers alike. And this is why these sports draw adventure-lovers in big numbers. If this is your calling too, it’s time to pack your bags and head straight to Maldives to indulge in these wonderful and exciting water sports in Maldives.”

 3. Surfing

“When I first caught a glimpse of the Atolls from the plane above on my first trip to the Maldives back in 1996 , my first thought was  “Wow, this is the true surfers paradise.””

 4. Fishing

“So you want to go fishing in the Maldives, and you want to charter a boat and catch some fish. You’ve heard it’s a tropical paradise, but don’t have a clue about what fishing looks or works like over there. Or, you’ve already been there and have decided to give fishing a go. Worry not! This guide will cover everything you need to know.”

5. Cruise – Maldives

“The Maldives is definitely not a major destination for cruise ships. Only a handful of vessels visit the archipelago each year. But those that do often arrive as part of unusual, long-distance itineraries that will let you visit not just the Maldives but other destinations in the region such as the Seychelles and Sri Lanka in a single trip — all while only having to pack and unpack once.”

6. Visit the Male Local Market

“Shopping in Maldives becomes exciting as soon as you enter Male Local Market. This huge market is one of the most popular street markets in Maldives located on the north waterfront. A favourite of locals, this bazaar tempts foreigners as well with numerous stalls selling local handicrafts, mementos, and gift items. Kiosks selling local snacks are the highlights of these market.”

 7.   Underwater Spa & Resort

“How come the Maldives stays unique among all the other tourist destinations around the world? Simply because the private island tourism in the country has envisaged truly unbelievable things for the world. The under ocean experience in the Maldives is truly one-of-a-kind set-up with fully submerged underwater accommodation and dining positioned meters down the ocean surface. Of course, they can be costly, but worth each and every penny and effort you make to feel them. But just dining and accommodation are not all. The Maldives has stashed holistic spa arena and wine bars amidst the coral garden in here, designating colorful fishes to be your hosts. Let us introduce to you some of the five star luxury resorts in Maldives that provide underwater luxury.”

 8.  Visit Theemuge

“Today. Male’ City may just seem to be a hustling and bustling city in which you hear the traffic jams and the vehicles occupying the streets completely! Although this is so, there is way more beauty in Male’ City than you can literally comprehend! Theemuge, may not strike your ears all of a sudden but wait till you see the inexplicable wonder that shall enthrall your heart at first sight! (Theemuge, the icon of pride of Maldivians)”

 9.  Tsunami Monument

“The 26th of December 2004, is a day almost all people in South Asia remember; on this fateful day a 9.1 to 9.3 magnitude earthquake in Sumatra led to a megathrust earthquake under the sea, triggering a series of tsunamis with some waves reaching heights of up to 100 feet. Sri Lanka, the Maldives, Thailand, Indonesia and India were amongst the countries affected by this natural disaster and the loss of life and destruction of property were catastrophic.

Built to remember this dark day and the lives lost, the Tsunami Monument in Male is quite a fascinating site that is worth visiting when in the Maldives.”

 10. Visit a Beach

“The sparkling blue, so clear beaches in the Maldives are the perfect romantic spots, not only for honeymooners but also for every couple who’s looking for a calming vacation! The Maldives is sprinkled with one of the finest and the most beautiful beaches in the world. The Islands within the Maldives have clean, white, fine as flour sand, beautifully embracing the round “emerald” of tropical vegetation. However, most of its beaches are untouched nestled amidst beautiful coral islands.”

Food Bonus

Your culinary experience in Maldives could be, depending on your resort, anything from haute cuisine ordered from a menu you’ve discussed with the chef in advance, to bangers and mash at the all-you-can-eat buffet in the communal dining room. What it’s unlikely to be in either case is particularly Maldivian, given the disconnection of resorts from local life. However, anyone staying in Male or on an inhabited island should take advantage of this opportunity to try real Maldivian food.
